“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” — John 4:24 (ESV)

“For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” — 2 Corinthians 11:13–14 (NIV)

Worship was designed to be sacred—holy and set apart for the glory of God. Yet from the very beginning, the enemy has sought to twist what is holy into something hollow. Lucifer, once a worship leader in heaven, fell because of pride and the desire to elevate himself above God (Isaiah 14:12–15). The very gift he once used to glorify God became a tool of rebellion. And that spirit is still at work today.

In many churches and gatherings, a Jezebel spirit—marked by manipulation, control, and counterfeit spirituality—is subtly hijacking what should be divine encounters. The Jezebel spirit does not always show up with overt rebellion; more often, it cloaks itself in charisma and spiritual language, especially in the context of worship. Its aim? To distort worship into witchcraft by turning the focus away from God and onto emotionalism, personalities, and personal gain.

This spirit thrives when believers let their guard down, mistaking emotional highs for true intimacy with God. Worship is no longer about exalting Jesus—it becomes about experiencing a feeling or receiving a blessing. And when that happens, we have not worshipped at all; we’ve been manipulated.

Paul’s warning in 2 Corinthians reminds us that deception doesn’t always appear in dark or obvious forms—it often masquerades as light. We must be vigilant. Not all worship is pure. When worship becomes a performance or a bait-and-switch to promote a prosperity gospel, it ceases to be holy. Yes, Worship has the ability to set an atmosphere for God to move on your behalf; but that’s not its sole purpose.

God never intended our praise to be a down payment for His blessings. True worship is our response to who God is, not a transaction to get what we want. We often times become bound to statements like, “when Praises go up, blessings come down!” But rest assured, that is not the case EVERYTIME we praise and Worship. If our blessings are tied to our praise, we are promoting a “works” gospel and no longer a Grace gospel. God blesses us through HIS Grace, NOT through OUR works. I would even go as far to ask, if the blessings ceased to “come down” everytime our praises “went up,” could you STILL praise God?

As believers, we must guard our hearts and remain discerning in the spiritual atmospheres we participate in. Let us not exchange the glory of God for the glitter of performance. Let us not be led by emotions but by truth. And let us remember that God seeks worshipers who worship Him in spirit and in truth—not in showmanship and self-interest.

Prayer: Father, purify our worship. Expose anything in our hearts that seeks to use You rather than honor You. Teach us to discern the difference between anointed worship and emotional manipulation. May our praise be a sweet aroma to You—not a means to an end. Help us to worship You for who You are, not just for what You do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
